Packing for Your Dream Cruise
Packing for cruise vacations isn't much different from packing for other long-term, overseas holidays, with a few exceptions: You'll probably have more use for formal wear, you'll spend less time dragging your luggage around and you'll probably visit multiple countries. Consider the following key items when packing for a cruise.
Passport Information
Cruises frequently cross international borders, so you'll have to take along an up-to-date passport and any necessary personal information and documents (such as a birth certificate) that you need for foreign travel.
Luggage
Cruise lines often offer vacation packages that include a flight at each end, unless you already live in the departing port city. While you won't have to handle your own luggage during the cruise, remember to pack within your baggage and weight allowance. Also, be reasonable about expecting porters to handle your luggage in busy airports. Leave plenty of time for luggage transfers, and remember to tip the porter. Check your bags inside the airport; most lost luggage goes astray at curbside check-in.
Fun in the Sun: Sunblock Required
Many cruise lines have ships with on-board pools and deck activities. If shuffleboard is your passion, be sure to slather on the sunblock. Also, carry sunblock with you when you're visiting ports of call. Put it on before you reach shore, and then again during the day to make sure you're protected.
In Between
Plan for the time between your flight's arrival and sailing time. You may be separated from your luggage for many hours. Carry a tote bag with essentials, just as you would on an airplane. Make sure your passport, travel information, credit cards and cash are in a safe place. A money belt that fits under your clothing is a good investment.
Cruise Vacation Clothing
Your luggage should be full of your favorite sports and leisure wear. Clothing for cruising should be comfortable, cool enough for sunny days and warm enough for breezy evenings. Shoes should not be brand new, particularly if you plan to walk, shop and visit. Plan to bring along shoes that are sturdy and have non-slip soles for walking the decks.
Packing Formal Wear
Even if you opt for the informal dining options and buffets, you should indulge in dining and dancing at least a few times while at sea. Get into the atmosphere of cruise vacations and dress up. This means packing formal wear: a cocktail dress or gown and dress pumps for ladies and a tuxedo and dress shoes for men.
Toiletries, Medications and First Aid
Packing toiletries for your cruise is much like that for any other trip. Don't forget medications and bring prescriptions if you think you might need refills. Don't load yourself down with first aid items, though, as the ship's doctor or nurse will have plenty of supplies.
Do You Really Need that Book?
Cruising will be a great time for catching up on reading and relaxing in a deck chair, but don't miss the opportunity to make new friends, visit foreign cities and towns and take full advantage of on-board amenities. You can read when you get home.
