Jamaica is the largest English-speaking Caribbean island and the third-largest island overall in the Caribbean, and there is plenty for vacationers to occupy themselves with. Jamaica is known for its water activities, scenery, reggae music, nightlife and much more.

Jamaica Weather

Jamaica has a tropical climate and generally has a temperature somewhere in the 66 to 99 degree range all year long. Even when rain occurs, the temperature is generally unchanged.
 
Jamaica’s hurricane season is in the months of June to September, but even then the island rarely sees hurricanes. Rain is more common in the months of May to June and September to November.

Regions of Jamaica

Jamaica is divided into six main regions:
  • Kingston
  • Montego Bay
  • Negril
  • Ocho Rios
  • Port Antonio
  • South Coast.
Each region offers gorgeous beaches and a host of entertaining activities for vacationers.

Kingston

As Jamaica’s capital, Kingston has a great many things to see and visit, including the Institute of Jamaica, Cayamanas Park, Lime Cay and Hope Botanical Gardens.
 
Kingston also has a great many eateries and places to stay, and guests will not be disappointed by the nightlife in Kingston. Club Habibi and the Weekenz Bistro and Bar are among the most popular nightlife spots to visit in Kingston.
 
Walking tours, water activities and other outdoor activities are also plentiful in Kingston.

Montego Bay

Windsurfing, day tours and safaris are among Montego Bay’s many exciting vacation activities. The Windsor Caves, made of limestone, are also worth a visit.
 
Montego Bay is also known for its great shopping, including the Gallery of West Indian Art and Tropiciana Jewelers.

Negril

Negril is known as a casual region of Jamaica and is a great place to relax and unwind, while enjoying the best sunsets in Jamaica.
 
Cliff diving, Seven Mile Beach and live music every night will ensure an enjoyable stay in Negril.

Ocho Rios

Ocho Rios is a great blend of excitement and relaxation. Visitors can interact with dolphins at Dolphin Cove, climb 600 feet of rapids at Dunn’s River Falls or visit craft markets that will be sure to provide unforgettable and unique souvenirs.
 
Ocho Rios also offers a many different water sports and beautiful gardens with a variety of tropical flowers and trees.

Port Antonio

Port Antonio is known for some of the best beaches in Jamaica. The region’s Blue Lagoon is also a beautiful and popular tourist destination.
 
Surfing, sport fishing, waterfalls and rapids rafting round out this region’s attractions.

South Coast

The least traveled of Jamaica’s regions, South Coast is a great spot for beach relaxation. South Coast is also a destination for bird watchers.
 
A highlight of this region is Black River. Visitors can take a boat ride past crocodiles and through mangroves.

Jamaica: Things to Know

Jamaican currency is the Jamaican dollar, but many places in Jamaica will accept American currency and credit cards.
 
A passport is required to visit Jamaica as of January 2007. The process of getting a passport can take six to eight weeks, so travelers are advised to start this process well in advance of any vacation.
 
Tourists should note that people drive on the left side of the road in Jamaica. This can be confusing at first, but in most instances tourists will not have to drive and can either walk or take buses or taxis everywhere they need to go.
